Not all acne is created equal. Cystic acne, large, painful bumps underneath the skin, is the most serious type of breakout and requires different treatment than other types of acne. Cysts form deep within the skin, rather than on the surface, and take much longer to heal. Cystic acne is caused by the same factors as other types of acne, including overactive oil production, excess dead skin cells and acne-causing bacteria (propionibacteria acnes). Acne occurs when the follicle wall ruptures and leaks infection into the dermis. When this rupture happens deep within the follicle wall, it forms a cyst.
Since these types of breakouts take longer to heal and are more painful, they can be a debilitating condition. Luckily, once you know how to treat these acne blemishes, you can attack them immediately when they first appear, which speeds healing time and prevents scarring.
Since cystic acne is inflamed, you must treat the redness and irritation along with the infection. A combination of ingredients and products will most effectively clear your skin and leave it calm and comfortable.
In the morning, start your regimen with a gentle cleansing product such as M2 Exfoliating Cleanser. After cleansing, apply an acne treatment serum with gentle alpha hydroxy acids, such as M2 Advanced High Potency Skin Refinish. The mandelic and malic acids safely exfoliate the skin and act as antibacterial agents. Once the serum is absorbed into the skin, apply a redness-reducing and hydrating lotion, such as SkinMedica Redness Relief Calmplex. For overnight spot treatment, apply a dab of a clay mask with sulfur, like Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clarifying Collodial Sulfur Mask to each blemish. This combination of products will soothe and clarify your skin, and in turn boost your confidence.
